Tibetans appeal to President for freedom

Bangalore, Mar 10 (UNI) Tibetans settled in Karnataka today appealed to President A P J Abdul Kalam to use his good offices to free Tibet from China.

In a memorandum, addressed to Dr Kalam and submitted to Governor T N Chaturvedi on 48th Anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising Day. it was stated that ''with great hope and trust, we believe that your Excellency would, in your great capacity, do your utmost in the early realisation of justice and victory to the truth of Tibetan struggle and make Tibet free from China.'' The Tibetan people were deprived of all basic rights, including religious, cultural, education and traditional rights and others that causes continuous exodus of over 3000 Tibetans each year from Tibet into Nepal and India, vindicating the deplorable conditions for Tibetans in Tibet.

India and Tibet have a unique relationship. ''Our two nations were not only neighbours but we also have close religious, cultural, trade and historical ties. India is not only the source of our spiritual heritage but it has also shown us the non-violent path.

India has not only historical ties but it has ties and relevance even today of material interest, of political interest and above all, the interest of humanity,'' the memorandum said.

The signatories to the letter included Tibetan Youth Congress Central Executive Committee Vice President Lobsang Yeshi, Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, Bylakuppe President Janyal Lakhyab Tsering and Regional Tibetan Women's Association President Samten Chodon.

Enrolment ratio in rural areas meagre: UGC Chairman

Chennai, Mar 10 (UNI) University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Sukhadeo Thorat today said the general enrolment ratio in rural areas was 5.58 per cent, compared to 20.44 per cent in the urban areas. Inaugurating the Conference on Higher Education and Inclusive Development, here, he said that the Muslims are found to have not only the lowest general enrolment ratio (GER) of 5.23 per cent, but their GER is nearly one-half of the national average, while other religious group have higher.....

Badal clan wins assembly polls in Punjab

Chandigarh, Feb 27 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) supremo Prakash Singh Badal and five of his close relatives romped home recording impressive wins in the Punjab assembly polls. Mr Badal himself won from his traditional Lambi segment defeating his cousin Mahesh Inder Singh by a margin of 9070 votes. In the neighbouring Gidderbaha constituency, the elder Badal's nephew, Manpreet Singh Badal won by a margin of over 9000 votes, to record his fourth consecutive win from this seat. Agitation against verdidct continue in Cauvery Basin

Mysore, Mar 10 (UNI) Protest and agitations continued against the final award of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in the Cauvery basin districts of Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar today. At Mandya, the daily wage workers took a procession against the verdict while various religious heads of Mallavalli also participated in the agitiation.
