Surgery for macaque to restore vision

Coimbatore, Mar 10 (UNI) A lion-tailed macaque with a blurred vision in the Pudhuthottam forest area here, will be 'hospitalised', in the next week, with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department deciding to perform a surgery to remove a tumour from its right eye.

Forest Veterinary Officer N S Manoharan told UNI that the male monkey was spotted as having very poor vision with a tumour growing in its right eye. It would be tranquillized and the tumour would be removed, he added.

The macaque, listed among the endangered species, would be shifted to a special enclosure till it completely recovered.

Meanwhile, Pallavan (35), a tamed elephant (Kumki), is recovering from a sprained forelimb, Dr Manoharan added.

Lankan Navy attack on Indian fishermen: DMK to stage demo

Chennai, Mar 10 (UNI) The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu will stage a protest demonstration in front of the Sri Lankan Embassy here tomorrow to condemn the recurring attacks on Indian fishermen by the Lankan Navy personnel. SAD-BJP MLAs to elect leader tomorrow

Chandigarh, Feb 27 (UNI) A meeting of the newly-elected MLAs of the SAD-BJP combine has been called here tomorrow to formally elect the leader of the alliance partners' legislature group. Enrolment ratio in rural areas meagre: UGC Chairman

Chennai, Mar 10 (UNI) University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Sukhadeo Thorat today said the general enrolment ratio in rural areas was 5.58 per cent, compared to 20.44 per cent in the urban areas. Inaugurating the Conference on Higher Education and Inclusive Development, here, he said that the Muslims are found to have not only the lowest general enrolment ratio (GER) of 5.23 per cent, but their GER is nearly one-half of the national average, while other religious group have higher.....
