EC bans release of prisoners on parole in UP

Lucknow, Mar 10 (UNI) Election Commission has banned release of prisoners on parole in Uttar Pradesh in view of the seven-phase assembly election starting next month.

According to an EC directive today, prisoners could be freed on parole only after taking approval from the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) with condition that they would not participate in the election process.

The district authorities have been asked to give details of such prisoners on parole to the central poll observer of the respective areas.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N Gopalaswami today visited Agra, where he reviewed the poll prepration for the first phase of election to be held on April 7.

Expressing satisfaction over the progress in the preparation, Mr Gopalaswami told mediapersons that all poll related material had reached their respective districts.

He said photography for Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) would continue till the last moment and hoped that about 95 per cent of the electorate will have the cards till the time of voting. At present, he said, the percentage of EPIC in UP is around 83 per cent.

The CEC said all the political parties have been directed to keep strict vigil on criminals.

Later, the CEC is also slated to visit Kanpur.

Congress leader arrested in Beas poll code violation

Amritsar, Mar 10 (UNI) Amritsar district Congress president Sukhjinder Singh Lalli was the arrested by the police for violation of the election code of conduct in the Beas assembly constituency this evening. Confirming the arrest, a police official said that the Congress leader violated the code of conduct by remaining in the constituency after campaigning ended last evening. Lalli was later produced before a Judicial Magistrate, who relased him on bail. Election in the Beas assembly constituency to be held tomorrow......

Around 60 pc voting reported in ZP, PS polls

Mumbai, Mar 11 (UNI) Around 60 per cent polling was reported in 27 Zilla Parishad and 310 Panchayat elections held today. Dubbed as ''mini assembly elections'' of Maharashtra, the elections were incident-free barring postponement of voting at 13 places in Adawad Chopda taluka in Jalgaon district. Official sources said the elections were postponed due to the failure of electronic voting machines. The elections are likely to prove an acid test for the ruling Congress-NCP combine, which is facing flak for.....

Polling ends in Kolhapur, Sangli

Kolhapur, Mar 11 (UNI) Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls passed off peacefully today in western Maharashtra's sugarcane belt Kolhapur and Sangli districts. Election office sources said Kolhapur and Sangli reported about 70 per cent polls. Barring minor altercations in some villages near polling booths, voting was peaceful, sources said. In these two districts, the main competition was between the Congress and NCP apart from other parties. The counting will commence at 0800 hrs tomorrow. UNI.....
