AP Govt to adopt Maharashtra model of sub-plan for SC/STs

Hyderabad, Mar 10 (UNI) Taking a leaf from Maharashtra, the Andhra Pradesh Government have proposed to adopt a sub-plan for the betterment of Scheduled Castes and Tribes, Social Welfare Minister D Redya Naik said.

A team of IAS officers would be shortly sent to Maharashtra to study the sub-plan for the weaker sections so that the same could be adopted in the state for implementation of welfare schemes for SCs and STs in a coordinated manner, he said in the assembly while replying to the debate on demand for grants for social welfare.

The Minister said he would shortly convene a meeting to ensure better prices for tamarind collected by the tribals.

He also promised to direct Panchayatraj department to complete drinking water schemes without any delay.

Housing Minister K Jana Reddy, replying to the demand for grants for his department, said 29 lakh houses would be constructed this year for the weaker sections.

Women and Child Welfare Minister N Rajyalakshmi, replying to the demand for grants for her department, expressed inability to regularise the services of Anganwadi workers, who were currently provided only honororium for their services.

She assured the members that backlog vacancies in the posts reserved for physically-challenged persons would be filled up soon.

As many as 29 rehabilitation centres were being started to take care of rescued sex workers, she informed.

The House adopted the demand for grants for Housing and Women and Child welfare by voice vote.

India Expo-2007 in Moscow

Chennai, Mar 10 (UNI) The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) will organise 'India Expo-2007' in Moscow from March 12 to 15 to showcase the country's wide range of quality products. FIEO chairman R K Dhawan will head a 70-member delegation representing more than 40 companies to the expo. Products ranging from pharmaceuticals, textiles, agro-products, life-style products, carpets, machinery items, home furnishings, automobile parts and health services would be displayed in this exposition, according to an official press release here......

Students articulate their vision of Chennai city by 2020

Chennai, Mar 10 (UNI) Over 60 students from over 20 schools in the city participated in the oratorical contest- 'Vijay Shanthi Vision Chennai 2020', organised by the city-based Vijay Shanthi builders here today. In a statement Executuive Director of the Company Naresh Jain said the contest was for students of eighth and ninth standards, and would serve as a platform for them to express and verbalise the vision they have for the city they were to inherit. Mercury spurts in parts of AP

Hyderabad, Mar 10 (UNI) Signalling the coming summer, mercury rose in parts of Andhra Pradesh in the last 24 hours as dry weather prevailed over the state. The highest maximum temperature of 40 deg C was recorded at Kadapa in the Rayalaseema region, the Weather Office said here today. The maximum temperatures were above normal at a few places over Rayalaseema while it was normal over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The minimum temperatures were above normal over Rayalaseema.....
