12 candidates elected unopposed in Tasgaon

Mumbai, Mar 10 (UNI) All 12 candidates were elected unopposed today in 12 wards of Tasgaon, where the elections were postponed by the State Election Commission.

The State Election Commissioner Nandlal had yesterday postponed the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls in all 12 wards from Tasgaon constituency in Sangli district.

Of the 12 wards, three were from Sangli Zilla Parishad while the remaining nine were from Tasgaon Panchayat Samiti. Today was the last day of withdrawal.

Reacting to the development, Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said the people of Tasgaon wanted election to be held and this is what happened.

He said some political parties and people tried to tarnish his image but failed in their mission.

The decision to announce the repoll was taken in the backdrop of a First Information Report (FIR) registered against Mr Patil for allegedly using pressure tactics and threatening a candidate to withdraw his nomination papers from the Panchayat Samiti elections in the district on thursday.

Shiv Sena Panchayat Samiti candidate Panchakshar Mahadev Jangum of Sidyewadi in Tasgaon tehsil, in his complaint, charged the Deputy Chief Minister and Sanjay Patil of threatening him to withdraw his candidature to pave way for the NCP candidate to be elected unopposed. However, the candidate later accused local BJP leaders of forcing him to file complaint against Patil.
