Rs 4,760 cr Special Purpose Tea Fund to be released for Asom

Guwahati, Mar 9 (UNI) The Tea Board of India and beneficiary tea planters will sign the first agreement for release of Rs 4,760 crore Special Purpose Tea Fund (SPTF) on June 25 .

Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh today said over 300 applications were received from tea planters with request for fund under the SPTF that is aimed at re-plantation and rejuvenation of aging tea bushes to increase the productivity and quality of tea.

Out of these applicants 200 are from Asom that contributes to over 55 per cent of the country's total tea production. About Rs 2,300 crore of the SPTF will be spent in the state alone during the next 15 years for replantation and rejuvenation of over 40 years old tea bushes, Mr Ramesh informed.

While 25 per cent of the fund will be used in tea estates in North Bengal, the rest 25 is meant for South Indian tea plantation during the next 15 years.

The STPF is expected to facilitate replantation and rejuvenation of tea crop over two lakh hectares of land all over the country and out of these one lakh hectare of tea producing land belonged to Upper Asom and Barak Valley.

He informed that about 800 tea gardens all over the country will be benefitted from the STPF which is likely to be implemented under the supervision of an exclusive monitoring committee within the Tea Board of India.

Guwahati to host IITF

Guwahati, Mar 9 (UNI): Putting an end to all speculations, the Union Commerce Ministry has decided to hold the India International Tea Festival (IITF) here in November after the Asom government assured proper security cover and quality hotel accommodation for participants. Union Minister of Commerce Jairam Ramesh today informed this capping all speculations about the venue being shifted to Kolkata. " It has been finally decided that the IITF will be held in Guwahati. Bengal Govt signs land lease agreement with Tata Motors

Kolkata, Mar 9(UNI) The West Bengal Government today signed a lease agreement with Tata Motors company for the land in Singur to be used for the proposed small car factory. Industry Secretary Sabyasachi Sen and Tata Motors Vice- President, Finance R S Thakur signed the agreement under which the state Government leased out 997 acres of land in Singur for 99 years. The proposed project, work for which had already started, created a controversy with divergent forces, including the opposition parties.....

Three dead, 3 injured as car hits mini truck

New Delhi, Mar 5 (UNI) Three persons died and an equal number were seriously injured when a Wagon-R banged into a TATA 407 in Patel Nagar area of West Delhi early morning today. Suraj (24), Dinesh (25) and Pradeep (25), who were sitting in the front seat, died on the spot near Shadipur Depot after their car crashed into the vehicle ahead of them, sources said. Their injured collegues Bhup Singh, Kishan and Akash were admitted to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay.....
