Police seize illegal sea-sand in Andamans

Port Blair, Mar 09 (UNI) Andaman and Nicobar police have seized 380 bags of sea sand, illegally extracted from Andaman sea coast, and arrested two persons, police said today.

The sand was seized in two cases. Extraction of sand is prohibited in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

''In the first case a police party saw a truck under suspicious condition and after chasing it, police recovered 70 bags of sea sand. The driver of the vehicle could not produce any document for transporting or procuring the sea sand,'' police said.

In the second case, 310 bags of sea sand were seized at Burma Jetty, Bambooflat in a joint operation conducted by the staff of Central Crime Station and Andaman and Nicobar police.

Cop attempts suicide

Coimbatore, Mar 9 (UNI) Frustrated at not being able to meet his family, a police constable on VIP escort duty today attempted to commit suicide at his office by pouring kerosene and setting himself alight. But he was saved by his colleagues. Police said Charles had been on VIP escort duty for the past several days. When he wanted permission to meet his family, the authorities refused to grant him leave. Irritated at this, Charles attempted to set himself alight. Alert.....

History-sheeter nabbed

Rajahmundry, Mar 9 (UNI) Police today arrested J Umamaheswara Rao (45) for his involvement in several house-breaking incidents in Tuni Town. Addressing press persons here, East Godavari SP B Srinivasulu said they recovered Rs 51,000 in cash and 80 sovereigns of gold worth Rs 3.2 lakh from his possession.
