Life paralysed in Sogam in north Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 9 (UNI) Life was today crippled in Sogam area of Lolab valley in north Kashmir due to complete shutdown in protest against alleged atrocities being committed by the Special Operation Group (SOG) of state police.

Hundreds of people today took to streets at Sogam, about 90 km from here in north, raising anti-SOG slogans.

The demonstrators, who also blocked the main road, complained that SOG personnel tortured a youth Ghulam Mohammad without any reason.

Shops and other business establishments remained closed and traffic was also off the road in protest against the incident.

Alleging SOG personnel deployed in the area were commiting atrocities and harassing people, particularly youths, they demanded immediate action against them.

People raid hotel, damage vehicles in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 9 (UNI) Hundreds of people, including women, raided a hotel, damaged furniture and parked vehicles in the city this afternoon. Official sources said a large number of people raided Hotel Le-Meridian near Iqbal Park on the Srinagar-Airport road this afternoon immediately after the Friday prayers were over. They alleged the hotel was being used for ''immoral activities.'' The agitators later damaged the furniture in the hotel. They also damaged about half-a-dozen parked vehicles and set on fire another vehicle.....

Haryana will fight for Rabi-Beas water share: Kidwai

Chandigarh, Mar 9 (UNI) Haryana Governor A R Kidwai today reiterated the firm commitment of the state government to get Haryana's complete share in Ravi-Beas waters through Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal. ''Concerted efforts are being made to have the matter decided expeditiously. The government is determined to protect the legitimate rights of the state and its people in this regard,'' the Governor said while addressing the members of the State Assembly on the first day of the Budget Session. Apologise or face action, asserts Bali

Shimla, Mar 9 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Transport and Tourism Minister G S Bali today asserted that the BJP should either apologise for levelling false corruption charges against him or face the consequences for it. Participating in the debate on general budget proposals for 2007-08 in the Vidhan Sabha, he said since the BJP had tarnished his image by leveling false allegations of corruption against him, they should either apologise or face action. Mr Bali said the opposition was free to bring.....
