Jaya to observe fast on Cauvery issue

Chennai, Mar 9 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today announced that she would observe one-day token fast on March 18 to condemn the Centre and the State Government for ''not initiating'' any step to implement the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

While she would lead the agitation in the city, AIADMK functionaries and cadres would observe token fast in all district headquarters, demanding the immediate gazette notification of the final award which was got after a 16-year-long struggle, she said in a statement here.

The AIADMK supremo also called upon farmers and general public to take part in the hunger strike in large numbers as the Cauvery issue was a ''life problem'' for Tamil Nadu.

Lambasting the DMK Government for ''not taking any effort'' to get Cauvery water for delta farmers even a month after the Tribunal had given its verdict, Ms Jayalalithaa had recently warned of direction action by the AIADMK in the matter.

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra (BJP) today sought a statement by Finance Minister P Chidambaram on news reports over a Rs 35,000 crore scam involving, among others, ten foreign banks, politicians and terrorists. National Grid soon for optimum use of power generation: Shinde

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today said a ''National Grid'' would be created soon for optimum utilisation of generation capacity through inter-regional transfer of power. Replying to a spate of questions in the Lok Sabha on power shortage in the country, he said there was an overall shortage of power in the country. This was estimated at 70,000 Mw at present.
