India bans trial of Microbicide for HIV/AIDS prevention: Govt

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) India has stopped trial of microbicide gel as an interim analysis revealed that the incidence of HIV in women using microbicide was higher as compared to the control group, Parliament was informed today.

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that though the trial of anti-HIV gel on women was being conducted in Chennai and Bangalore it was stopped following the report of the Independent Data Monitoring Committee.

She said that the Phase III clinical trial of a candidate Microbicide '6% Cellulose Sulphate' was being conducted at YRG Care, Chennai and St John Medical College, Bangalore. The trial of microbicide also going on in South Africa, Benin and Uganda.

Microbicide are a major focus of HIV/AIDS research worldwide with a number of gels undergoing trial to check their efficacy in preventing the spread of the virus to women.

Planning Commission looking into Micro Credit Task Force Report

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) A steering Committee on Micro Finance and Poverty Alleviation set up in the Planning Commission is looking into the Report of the Task Force on Micro Credit to the Urban Poor. Govt. to launch multi-pronged strategy to deal with price rise

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) Admitting that runaway inflation and steep rise in prices of essential commodities had become major irritants in the midst of a booming economy, the government today said it would launch a multi-pronged strategy, including a revamp of Public Distribution System (PDS), to deal with the problem. Replying to a debate on a private member's resolution on the issue in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Agriculture Kantilal Bhuria said the government would strengthen the procurement.....

Farmers' suicides: Govt to conduct survey of pvt money lenders

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) The issue of farmers' suicides in different parts of the country today prompted Rajya Sabha Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who himself hails from an agricultural background, to intervene during Question Hour with his useful suggestions. He directed Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to conduct a survey of private money lenders whose ever increasing debt on farmers was one of the main reasons of their resorting to the extreme step of ending their lives.
