ICAI, FinMin officials interact in post-Budget discussions

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) officials today called for extension to other cities, the present concessions granted for hotels in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi in the Union Budget 2007-08 proposals.

Presenting their views on the provisions of the Finance Bill, 2007, the institute representatives further requested the Government for restoration of the powers of the Commissioner to condone delay in making application for registration of a charitable trust. The power has been removed in the budgetary proposals.

Regarding disallowance of expenditure under the proposed new sub-section (3) of Section 40, the ICAI members, taking part in an interface with Finance Ministry officials, suggested that modern modes of payment such as electronic clearing services and mail transfer services should be permitted.

Mr Arbind Modi, Joint Secretary (TPL-II), Ms Anita Kapur, Joint Secretary (TPL-I), Mr R Sekar, Joint Secretary (Service Tax), Mr Sushil Solanki, Commissioner of Central Excise (CBEC) and Mr G D Lohani, Additional Commissioner, CBEC, took part in the discussions.

While the pre-lunch session was devoted to discussion on direct taxes, in the post lunch attention was given to indirect taxes.

Issues relating to excise and service tax were raised by the CAs including service tax on works contract, audit by CAs for service tax and service tax on commercial rented premises.

On the request of the Finance Ministry, ICAI will forward a detailed memorandum containing points for the persual of the Ministry officials.

EC announces bypolls for two Parliamentary seats

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) The Election Commission today announced bypolls to Rajnandgaon parliamentary seat in Chhattisgarh and Palamu in Jharkhand to be held on March 29. These Lok Sabha seats had fallen vacant due to expulsion of MPs after the cash-for-query scam. The EC said notification will be issued on March 3 and March 10 would be the last date for filing nominations. Scrutiny of nomination papers would take place on March 12 and March 14 will be the last.....

Counting of votes to begin tomorrow, results expected by noon

Chandigarh, Feb 26 (UNI) The counting of votes will begin tomorrow at 0800 hrs at 116 polling centres simultaneously across Punjab, where over 76 per cent of 1.67 crore electorate had participated in polls for 116 assembly seats. The counting will also be taken up for prestigious Amritsar parliamentary constituency where star BJP candidate Navjot Singh Sidhu is pitted against finance minister Surinder Singla. Tomorrow is the day of reckoning for 1038 candidates, 49 of them women. The result,.....

Uttaranchal poll results tomorrow

Dehra Dun, Feb 26 (UNI) Counting of votes for Uttarakhand's second-ever Assembly elections will be taken up tomorrow, with the outcome expected to foreshadow the performance of various parties in the adjoining parent state -- the politically important Uttar Pradesh which undergoes a seven-phase poll in April-May. The main fight in the hill state is between the BJP and the incumbent Congress government of N D Tiwari, with the former seen to have an edge and be the party most likely.....
