FM introduces Bill in LS for phasing out CST

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) Finance Minister P Chidambaram today introduced in the Lok Sabha a Bill for phasing out Central Sales Tax (CST) in three years to facilitate imposition of Goods and Services Tax (GST) from April 1, 2010.

According to the financial memorandum of the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2007, states would be compensated through monetary and non-monetary measures following the phasing out of the CST.

A provision of Rs 2,500 crore has been provided in the 2007-08 Budget. The total revenue loss due to the one per cent reduction in the CST rate in 2007-08 is estimated at Rs 6,350 crore, which would increase in the following years.

MP bypoll vote counting

Bhopal, Mar 10 (UNI) Votes polled on Thursday's byelection in Gwalior and Sidhi Lok Sabha and Udaypura Assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh will be counted tomorrow at the respective district headquarters. The results were expected by noon, official sources said. In a low voters' turn-out in the byelections, only 42 percent polling was recorded in Gwalior, 48.87 percent in Sidhi(ST) and 52 percent in Udaypura constituencies, having a total 45 candidates and over 26 lakh electorate. Jindal steel achieves 3 million tonne capacity

Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, Mar 10 (UNI) Jindal Steel and Power Limited has achieved an annual three million tonne iron-making capacity with the commissioning of a new blast furnace at its plant here in Chhattisgarh. Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh inaugurated the new blast furnace, which has a hot metal capacity of 1.25 million tonnes per annum, at a function yesterday. Later, he also dedicated 'O P Jindal Kelo Setu', a steel girder bridge, built at a cost of more than Rs three.....

Prohibitory orders clamped in Rajnandgaon

Rajnandgaon, Mar 10 (UNI) Prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC have been imposed in entire Rajnandgaon district where Lok Sabha byelection is in progress. Under the prohibitory orders effective till April 2, political parties and candidates will have to seek prior permission for holding election meetings, District Collector R S Vishwakarma said. Ban on public meetings and carrying arms have been banned, he said. Polling in Rajnandgaon is scheduled on March 29 and today is the last date for filing nominations......
