CEC to review first phase polling preparedness tomorrow

Lucknow, Mar 9 (UNI) Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami will review preparation for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh polls tomorrow.

The CEC will visit Agra and Kanpur to review the preparation with senior officials for the first phase of polling in 62 assembly seats slated on April 7.

State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anuj Kumar Bishnoi said here today he will accompany Mr Gopalasami to both the places.

The notification for the first phase would be issued on March 13.

Meanwhile, the state government today held meeting with senior officials including those drawn from the central forces for coordinating deployment of Central Para Military Forces (CPMF) during the polls.

CRFP Inspector General of Police (IG) Karamvir Singh has been made the nodal officer on the deployment of CPMF in the seven phase assembly polls.

On the other hand, Election Commission has issued directive that all vehicles to be used during electioneering should be registered with the commission.

Training of poll personnel, two from each district, on scanning of affidavits to be filed by the candidates would be held in the state capital tomorrow.

The state government today said till March 7, altogether 1,769 illegal arms had been seized, 1,737 raids conducted and 5,557 non- bailable warrants enforced.

Dr Shubha Raul Mayor, Vidya Thakur dy Mayor of Mumbai

Mumbai, Mar 10 (UNI) The ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance candidates emerged victorious today in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corparation (BMC) Mayoral election with Dr Shubha Raul of the Shiv Sena elected as Mayor and BJP'S Vidya Thakur, Deputy Mayor. Dr Raul, who polled 117 votes, beat Congress candidate Shital Mhatre by 17 votes. Ms Thakur also won by a similar margin defeating NCP candidate Bharati Pisal. The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance, having a combined strength of 111, got six votes from outside.....

Fencing affected people's hunger strike in Tripura enters 27 day

Agartala, Mar 8 (UNI) The relay hunger strike by the people of Sonamura sub-division in Tripura's West District, along the Bangladesh border, who were affected due to fencing, entered the 27th day today. Police told UNI that people of Sonamura, affected following the erection of barbed wire fencing along the international border, started a relay hunger strike from February 10 demanding financial and rehabilitation help. 12 candidates elected unopposed in Tasgaon

Mumbai, Mar 10 (UNI) All 12 candidates were elected unopposed today in 12 wards of Tasgaon, where the elections were postponed by the State Election Commission. The State Election Commissioner Nandlal had yesterday postponed the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls in all 12 wards from Tasgaon constituency in Sangli district. Of the 12 wards, three were from Sangli Zilla Parishad while the remaining nine were from Tasgaon Panchayat Samiti. Today was the last day of withdrawal. Reacting to the development,.....
