Bus burning case convicts appeal to Madras HC

Chennai, Mar 9 (UNI) Twenty-five persons sentenced to seven years Rigorous Imprisonment by a Salem Sessions Court in the sensational 2000 Dharmapuri Bus Burning Case today filed appeals against their convictions in Madras High Court.

Three students of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) were charred to death when an irate mob of AIADMK supporters set fire to their bus at Dharmapuri on Feburary three following the conviction of Party General Secretary J Jayalalithaa in the Pleasant Stay Hotel Case.

Besides the 25 accused, First Additional Sessions Judge D Krishnaraja awarded death sentence to three persons.

Former AIADMK Dharmapuri Town Unit Secretary Nedu alias Nedunchezhian, Former Town MGR Forum Functionary Madhu alias Ravichandran and Former Panchayat President P Muniappan were sentenced to death in the case.

Muniappan had already approached the High Court with an appeal on the sentence.

In all 31 persons were accused in the case. While one person died during the course of the trial, two were acquitted.

CBI raids BSNL employee's house

Hazaribagh, Mar 10 (UNI) CBI sleuths had raided a BSNL employee's house, for his alleged invovlement in irregularities during his tenure as cashier in the department. Sources today said the raid was conducted in Vinod Singh's house on Panditji road in the district and in another house in Anti village in Gaya district of Bihar. The seven-member team intorrogated Singh for more than seven hours and then took him to Ranchi. Important documents were also seized from his house. UNI.....

Notorious criminal surrenders

Bettiah,Mar 10 (UNI) A notorious criminal, wanted in connection with several cases of murder, dacoity, extortion and kidnappings, today surrendered before the Bihar police. Police said Awadhesh Yadav surrendered before Bagaha Superintendent of Police Vikash Vaibhav at Shera Bazar under Bathwaria police station area. ''He also surrendered a rifle and four live cartridges before Vaivhav,'' police added. Ms Meera Devi, spouse of the criminal, is Mukhiya of Rupwalia panchayat in Devi Bahagha block. UNI.....

Four held for extortion in Nagaland

Kohima, Mar 10 (UNI) Dimapur police arrested four Manipuri youths for extortion and shooting a minor boy from Golaghat Road area of Dimapur town and recovered one US-made pen pistol from their possession yesterday, official sources said today. They were demading a sum of Rs 20,000 from a housewife at Naga United Village. When she refused to give the money, they fired but the bullet hit her 14-year-old son and seriously injured him. The Police also seized one round of .22.....
