Budget earmarks Rs 100 cr for tourism

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 9 (UNI) In a bid to give a fillip to the tourism industry, the Kerala Budget for 2007-08 presented today has set aside Rs 100 crore for various tourism projects in the state.

Presenting the Budget in the state Assembly, Finance Minister Thomas Issac said Rs 41.5 crore has been earmarked for developing the basic infrastructure of tourist centres.

Besides this, Rs two crore had been kept for developing eco-tourism and Rs three crore for cultural and environment protection in the state .

The Budget also allocated Rs 15 crore for promotion of tourism and two crore each for the District Tourism Promotion Councils.

Mr Issac said the Pathiramanal Island in Alapuzha district would be developed as an Eco-tourism centre and the island would be converted into a botanical park.

Stressing that the tourism centres in the Malabar region would be developed, he said different projects had been submitted to the Union Tourism Ministry and an assistance of Rs 30 crore was expected. The state government was setting apart Rs four crore for this.

The tourism department, in collaboration with other departments, would conduct a Kerala Shopping fest from the third week of October to January 2008, he added.

Jaya to observe fast on Cauvery issue

Chennai, Mar 9 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today announced that she would observe one-day token fast on March 18 to condemn the Centre and the State Government for ''not initiating'' any step to implement the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. While she would lead the agitation in the city, AIADMK functionaries and cadres would observe token fast in all district headquarters, demanding the immediate gazette notification of the final award which was got after a 16-year-long.....

Kerala FM presents Rs 138.44 cr deficit Budget

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 9 (UNI) Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac today presented in the state Assembly a Rs 138.44 crore deficit Budget for the year 2007-08, targeting an additional resource mobilisation of Rs 248.69 crore by hiking the taxes for tobacco products, motor vehicles and several other sectors. AP to press for cheap gas

Hyderabad, May 9 (UNI) Approving formation of the Krishna-Godavari Gas network for laying gas piplines, the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet today resolved to demand royalty in the form of gas from the Centre and put conditions to protect the state's interest before giving permission to gas explorers to lay pipelines.
