70 year-old woman gangraped

Madikeri, Mar 9 (UNI) In a shocking incident, a 70-year-old woman was raped by three youths at Taltare Shettalli village at Somwarpet Taluk, near here, the police said today.

According to the police, Lokesh, Sampath and Raghu went to the house of an old couple on the night on March 6 on the pretext of asking for a torch light. They made the couple drink alcohol and the woman was dragged out into the forest and allegedly raped. Her husband began shouting for help from the window and their son who lives at a distance, rushed to the spot. The old lady was found in an unconscious state.

The police, who received the complaint at first hand, settled the issue suspiciously by taking a written apology and the accused were allowed to go scot free.

Yesterday, members of the Cauvery Gramina Abhivrudhi Samithi once again lodged a complaint and protested the injustice.

Succumbing to pressure, the police arrested Raghu and Sampath and registered a case. Villagers said the case would have been closed had they not protested.
