Mamoni launches new bid for peace in Asom

Guwahati, Mar 8 (UNI) The civil society in Asom has made another attempt to bring about a peaceful solution to insurgency with Jnanpith awardee Dr Indira Goswami taking the initiative.

After her bitter experience with the government and the Peoples Consultative Group(PCG) to bring the ULFA to the negotiating table, the new initiative under the banner of Citizen Peace Forum has been launched with intelligentsia of Asom getting involved.

Besides Dr Goswami, the members include Suchibrata Raychoudhury, Nitya Bora and Dr Hiren Gohain. The new forum will try to explore the possibility of the civil society playing more significant role between the government and the militant group like the Naga Ho Ho of Nagaland.

The first meeting was held here yesteray which was presided over by Dr Goswami. The new development has once again revived the hope for peace although neither the ULFA nor the government has acknowledged the new effort.
