India names four judges for the committee on prisoners

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) India today announced the names of four retired judges constituting the Committee on Prisoners to propose steps to ensure humane treatment and expeditious release of Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails.

The Judges are Justice K R Vyas (former Chief Justice, Bombay High Court), Justice Amarjit Choudhary (former judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court), Justice A S Gill (former judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court) and Justice M A Khan (former judge of the Delhi High Court).

The names have been communicated to Pakistan, an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said.

The two countries had agreed to establish a committee on prisoners during the January 13-14 visit of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Islamabad to meet his counterpart Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri.

''We agreed to establish a committee on prisoners comprising retired judges of the superior judiciary to visit jails in the two countries and propose steps to ensure humane treatment and expedite release of prisoners who have complete their prison terms,'' the External Affairs Minister said after talks with Mr Kasuri in Islamabad on January 14.

Prop tax payers can pay either by Unit Area system or old system

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) Facing allegations that many people were being forced to pay property tax levied according to the old system rather than the Unit Area method introduced a few years ago, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi today clarified that property tax payers are free to pay their pending amount through either of the two systems.
