HC refuses to vacate stay in murder case

Bangalore, Mar 8 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court today refused to vacate the interim order of stay of proceedings in a murder case of one Reddy and his associate in which former Speaker Ramesh Kumar was also one of the accused.

Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice B S Patil refused to grant interim injunction after hearing the state government on two connected writ petitions filed by Mr Ramesh Kumar, MLA, and three others and Mr K V Shivareddy challenging the government order on July 22, last year, appointing Mr H M Thimmarayappa as the Special Public Prosecutor to conduct the case in the High Court, by withdrawing its earlier order on May 20, 2006.

On these petitions, the High Court had granted an interim order on August 18, last year, staying further proceedings of the prosecution.

The case pertained to the murder of one Reddy and his associate near a village in Srinivasapura taluk of Kolar district.

Govt officials accused of laxity in protecting lands

Bangalore, Mar 8 (UNI) Mr A I Ramaswamy, Chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee, investigating the encroachment of government lands, today alleged that various state departments were not making any effort to protect government lands in their possession in connivance with land sharks in urban and rural districts of Bangalore. Addressing newspersons here, he said large tracts of prime government land was in the possession of various departments, including health, education and local bodies, but they showed scant interest in protecting.....

Medha Patkar to take up cudgels for slum dwellers

Bangalore, Feb 24 (UNI) Narmada Bachao Andolan leader and social activist Medha Patkar will launch a nationwide agitation from March 19, demanding regularisation of land for slum dwellers living in urban areas. Addressing a largely attended protest meeting of slum dwellers here today, she said the stir would be launched in New Delhi to protect the rights of those living in villages and slums in cities and towns. In the name of development, the Union and State Governments were adopting anti-people.....
