HC declines to stay agreement signed between Govt, ADB

Kochi, Mar 8 (UNI) A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court today declined to stay an agreement signed between the state government and Asian Development Bank (ADB) last year.

The Bench, comprising acting Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice M N Krishnan, however made strong observations on the way in which the government entered into the agreement with the ADB.

Hearing two Public Interest Litigations (PIL) filed by the Anti-ADB Loan Committee and an another organisation, seeking a stay on the implementation of the agreement, the Court issued notice to the Centre and state government.

While observing that the ADB loan was being utilised to improve the urban infrastructure, water supply, sewerage and sanitary facilities, the Court said the government should have conducted a study of economic costs and beneficial analysis before entering into such an agreement.

It further added that the state Cabinet should have been taken into confidence before the resident commissioner was authorised to sign the loan agreement.

Lashker militant arrested alongwith arms in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 1 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested a militant of Pakistan based Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) alongwith arms and ammunition in south Kashmir today. A police spokesman said police conducted a search operation at Heff in Pulwama district of South Kashmir this morning. During the operation, LeT militant Showkat Ahmad Tantray was arrested. HC adjourns case against Taslima Nasreen

Chennai, Mar 8 (UNI) Madras High Court today adjourned to next week the hearing on a petition seeking to register a case against controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen for her alleged defamatory and blasphemous statements on Islam. When the petition filed by Tamil Nadu Muslim Makkal Katchi President S M Pasha came for hearing before Justice K N Basha, Additional Public Prosecutor Kumaresan sought time for getting instructions from the Commissioner of Police, Chennai. Following this, the judge adjourned the hearing.....

Four members suspended for disrupting Governor's Speech

Jaipur, Mar 1 (UNI) Four opposition members in the Rajasthan assembly were suspended for disrupting the Governor's speech during the budget session which began here today. Pandemonium prevailed in the house throughout the day with Opposition and ruling party members involved in wrangling over procedure.
