Court asks Gawli to appear on March 12

Mumbai, Mar 8 (UNI) A local court has summoned gangster-turned-MLA Arun Gawli to appear before it on March 12 after the police urged the court to cancel the bail granted to him in a misappropriation case.

Additional Sessions Judge P D Vishwasrao today directed Gawli to appear before the court on March 12.

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) had arrested Gawli a few months ago for allegedly misappropriating funds of employees' union affiliated to his party, the Akhil Bharatiya Sena. Gawli had allegedly deposited a sum of Rs 85 lakh, that belonged to the union and was supposed to be distributed among the members, in the account of a chartiable trust run by him.

Following the arrest, Gawli was produced before a Metropolitan Magistrate but was released on bail immediately. The court, however, had directed him to ensure that the amount was disbursed among the members.

The prosecution, while arguing against the bail, had contended that granting immediate bail to Gawli was bad in law as the investigation agency should be provided adequate time to investigate the matter.
