Arunachal CM urges PM for higher allocation

Itanagar, Mar 8 (UNI) Chief Minister Gegong Apang has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to provide higher fund allocation to Arunachal Pradesh.

Mr Apang, who met the Prime Minister on Tuesday in Delhi, requested Dr Singh to give special focus on road construction under the Special Area Road Development programme, early completion of the Ranaghat bridge over Siang near Pasighat and fair weather road link to 34 unconnected administrative centres during the 11th Five Year Plan.

He urged for a one-time waiver of heavy debt burden which had been slowing down the state's development.

The Chief Minister also held a discussion with Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on the overall development of the state's hydropower sector.

Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy also assured assistance to bring Itanagar at par with other large metropolitan cities.

Referring to the Rs 1320 crore annual allocation for 2007-08, a hike of 25 per cent over the current fiscal's outlay, the Chief Minister said efforts were on to connect all administrative centres with all-season roads.

Mr Apang also met President Dr A P J Kalam, UPA Chirperson Sonia Gandhi, Union Programme Implementation Minister Oscar Fernandes and Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju.

CEC to review first phase polling preparedness tomorrow

Lucknow, Mar 9 (UNI) Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami will review preparation for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh polls tomorrow. The CEC will visit Agra and Kanpur to review the preparation with senior officials for the first phase of polling in 62 assembly seats slated on April 7. State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anuj Kumar Bishnoi said here today he will accompany Mr Gopalasami to both the places. The notification for the first phase would be issued on March 13......

Abu Salem gets party platform for UP poll

Varanasi, Mar 9 (UNI) Rashtriya Krantikari Samajwadi Party (RKSP) -- a former constituent of V P Singh-Raj Babbar's Jan Morcha -- today reiterated it would field jailed underworld don Abu Salem in coming Uttar Pradesh assembly poll provided all legal hurdles in the process were cleared in time. ''We will certainly field Salem from Mubarakpur seat of Azamgarh district if his name is included in the voter list of the constituency by March 20,'' RKSP national president Gopal Rai said here.....

Scarcity of fish in Arunachal

Itanagar, Mar 8 (UNI) Fish lovers in Arunachal Pradesh are finding it difficult to savour their palates following scarcity of fish in the markets, particularly in the twin capital cities of Naharlagun and Itanagar. The fish vendors continued to suspend bringing the delicacies for the fourth day today following the 12.5 per cent tax levied on it.
