Two TSR jawans killed in ambush

Agartala, Mar 7(UNI) Two Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans were shot dead and two critically injured in an ambush by the underground militants in West District, last night, police said today.

They said a group of armed tribal militants, suspected to be All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), laid an ambush in the Atharamura Hill range and started firing on the 6th battalion TSR jawans of Binan Hazari para last night.

Two jawans died on the spot and many received bullet injuries. The seriously injured jawans were immediately rushed to the Khowai Hospital here.

The deceased jawans were identified as lance Naik Alok Das and rifleman Samir Chowdhury.

Taking the advantage of darkness, the militants took away two AK 47 rifles from the deceased and fled.

Police and TSR officials had launched a combing operation in the Atharamura Hill areas following the ambush to nab the guerrillas.

However, no one was arrested so far, police said.

In another incident, an encounter took place betwen TSR jawans and underground rebels in a jungle, about 18 kms from Sidhai police station under West District yesterday.

There was no report of any casualty on either side.

Newly appointed Tripura police Director General K T D Singh said the anti-insurgency operation would continue to wipe out the terrorist activities in the state.

Publication of voters list postponed

Puducherry, Feb 23 (UNI) The Election Department today postponed the publication of the final voters list in the Union Territory, scheduled for February 26. The Joint Chief Electoral Officer(CEO) P T Rudra Goud in a release here said this is in view of the Election Commission of India's direction to conduct a random spot verification of admitted claims in some of the Assembly Constituencies here, where the number of such claims was high.
