Tributes paid to Malgudi man

Mysore, Mar 7 (UNI) Litterateurs and academicians from across the globe reminisced the works of celebrated writer R K Narayan at a three-day international seminar which began at his hometown here today.

The seminar on the works of the Malgudi man followed the successful international symposium by the Sahitya Akademi and the Central Institute of Indian Languages here recently on the occasion of his birth centenary.

Delivering the keynote address at the seminar, organised by the English department of the University of Mysore, Prof Syd Harrex of Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, dedicated his speech to the memory of late Prof C D Narasimaiah, acknowledging his legendary achievements in literary, cultural and historical studies and said his presentations were based on personal reminiscences. Although Mr Narayan's creation Malgudi was imaginary, the characters of that town could be seen in real life.

Stating that he had learnt a great deal about Mr Narayan from Prof Narasimaiah, he said ''I met Mr Narayan during my visit to Mysore in February 1971. Mr Narayan was more than happy to discuss the fusion of fact and fiction in his work.'' MORE UNI

NREGP to be extended to 130 more districts

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) The Centre today announced that the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), a flagship programme of the ruling UPA, will be extended to 130 more districts, including 15 with incidents of farmers' suicide, during the current year. Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Sing told the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour that the largest number of 17 districts would be from Uttar Pradesh. Elders voice concern over jute workers' plight in West Bengal

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) Cutting across party lines, Members in the Rajya Sabha today expressed concern on the ongoing agitation by jute workers in West Bengal and demanded immediate central intervention to mitigate their sufferings. Mr Moin-ul-Hasan and Mr Abani Roy (both CPM), Mr Rudranarayan Pani (BJP) and Mr Amar Singh (Samajwadi Party) demanded intervention by the Central Government against jute mill owners pointing out that lakhs of jute mill workers were not being paid their dues. Centre to amend IPC, make new law on missing children

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) The Centre will amend the India Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure or bring in new legislation to prevent incidents of children's disappearance across the country, Home Minister Shivraj Patil said today. The Government is awaiting the final report of the Committee of Women and Child Welfare Ministry formed after a large number of children's skeletal remains were found in Nithari village of Noida district of Uttar Pradesh, the Home Minister told the Rajya.....
