This baby is really big!

Chennai, Mar 7 (UNI) A 24-year-old woman here has delivered a 5.8-kg baby girl who could probably be India's heaviest infant.

The yet-to-be-named baby, born by caesarean section at the ESI Hosptial here on February 22, was very active and healthy, Paediatric Specialist Suresh David told UNI.

This could be India's biggest baby as there was no documentary evidence for any such case, he said.

The previous biggest baby was believed to have weighed 4.2 kg.

Normally, factors like gestational diabetes could contribute to big babies. But in this case it was a rare condition as both the parents were found to be normal and were medium built, he said.

As big babies normally suffer from early complications like hypo glycemia (low glucose levels), the infant was kept in the new-born Intensive Care Unit and monitored for temperature and blood sugar.

The baby was initially fed milk through a naso-gastric tube as the mother was very weak. The baby had successfully undergone various investigations, including echo-cardiogram and ultrasound scan, and was very active now, he said.
