Ten states yet to set up State Human Rights Commission: Jaiswal

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) Despite repeated directions from the Centre and the National Human Rights Commission, as many as ten states have not constituted State Human Rights Commission, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said in a written reply that the states which have not constituted the SHRC were Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Haryana, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Uttaranchal.

He pointed out that setting of SHRC was the responsibility of the state governments.

''However, the Central Government, and also the National Human Rights Commission, have impressed upon all those states which have not yet set up SHRC in their respective states,'' Mr Jaiswal said and attributed the non-setting up of SHRC to ''lack of funds and lower number of complaints.'' Meanwhile, 18 states have constituted the SHRCs including Asom, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Bihar and Gujarat, he informed.
