Padma Awards to be presented on March 23, April 5

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) The Padma Awards for 2006 will be presented to the recipients by President A P J Abdul Kalam in two batches on March 23 and April 5.

Home Ministry sources told UNI here today that 62 awardees of Padmashri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan would be conferred the awards at a ceremony to be held at the historic Ashoka Hall in RAshtrapathi Bhavan on March 23.

The second batch of 58 awardees from the three categories would receive the awards on April 5 at the same venue.

Sources said the intimation letters have already been despatched to all the 120 eminent persons whose names were announced for the three categories of civilian awards on January 25 last.

There was no nomination for the highest civilian award of "Bharat Ratna" this year.

Taliban kidnaps two PAEC scientists; adds 'N' dimension to terrorism

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) Adding a new and a dangerous dimension to global terrorism, Taliban has kidnapped two top Pakistani nuclear scientists and are holding them in custody raising the spectre of a nuclear threat, a television channel reported tonight. A press release issued by Zee television said the two scientists of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) ''are currently in Taliban custody''. This baby is really big!

Chennai, Mar 7 (UNI) A 24-year-old woman here has delivered a 5.8-kg baby girl who could probably be India's heaviest infant. The yet-to-be-named baby, born by caesarean section at the ESI Hosptial here on February 22, was very active and healthy, Paediatric Specialist Suresh David told UNI. This could be India's biggest baby as there was no documentary evidence for any such case, he said. The previous biggest baby was believed to have weighed 4.2 kg. Normally, factors.....

UP govt sends panels for change in police chief of Lucknow

Lucknow, Mar 7(UNI) Uttar Pradesh government has sent a panel of four names to the Election Commission for selecting the new senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Lucknow. According to sources, present SSP Rajiv Krishan would be shifted out of the post as Lucknow his home district and under the EC rules no official related to the election duty can work in his home town.
