No let up in Cauvery protests

Mysore, Mar 7 (UNI) Even as the members of Parliament from Karnataka staged a protest in New Delhi against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, the agitations continued unabated in the Cauvery basin districts of Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar for the 31st day today.

In Mandya, the Ration Distributors Association took out a procession against the verdict. Cauvery Hitarakshana Samithi President and former MP G Made Gowda, along with former Minister M S Athmananda, joined the march from Silver Jubilee park to the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum.

Mr Gowda said the ongoing protests would be intensified after the Ugadi festival on March 19 on the lines of the non-cooperation movement. Stopping tax payment, non-payment of electricity bills and non-payment of bus fares would be practiced, he warned, calling upon the protestors to be ready to go to jail also for the sake of Cauvery water.

Protests and agitations by various organisations continued in Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts.

Core banking solutions enter micro finance segment

Bangalore, Mar 7 (UNI) Financial Information Network and Operations (FINO) today announced the launching of core banking in a Micro Finance Institution for the first time in the country with the recipient being Janalakshmi Social services. Janalakshmi is a urban micro financing organisation catering to the credit requirements of urban poor covering around 40,000 families in Bangalore with the cumulative credit sanction expected to touch Rs 24 crore this fiscal. Kerala proposes to change shock treatment for mental patients

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 15 (UNI) Kerala Health Minister P K Sreemathy today told the Assembly that the government was proposing to make a change to the existing system of 'shock treatment' for treating mental patients. Replying to queries by Mr K Ajith and others, she said the government would discuss the issue with experts in this field for replacing the cruel method of treatment with counselling. Ms Sreemathy said steps would also be taken to impart training to nurses working in mental.....
