Journalist arrested in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Mar 7 (UNI) The Bangladesh Army arrested Bengali daily ''Janakantha'' editor and businessman Atiqullah Khan Masud from his office here tonight.

Earlier, the army-led joint forces arrested Managing Director of private television channel NTV Enayetur Rahim. Later he was sent to Dhaka central jail.

Although the authorities did not disclose the reasons behind their arrests, it is believed that corruption could be one of the reasons.

Since the promulgation of the state of emergency, the interim government has rounded up more than 40 former ministers, MPs and businessmen on charges of corruption and abuse of power as part of its ''anti-corruption drive''.

TTD chairman releases Sri Sarvajeet Nama Savasra panchagam

Tirumala, Mar 13 (UNI) The Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Trust Board Chairman B Karunakara Reddy released the Sri Sarvajeet Nama Savasra Panchagam-2007, in front of the Sri Vari temple here today. Published by the TTD, the panchagam was released in three languages Telugu, Tamil and Kannada. In the first phase 40,000 copies in Telugu and 2,000 each in Tamil and Kannada were printed. Later, talking to reporters, Mr Reddy said the TTD was taking necessary steps to bring out the panchagam.....

US report cites serious problems on India's rights front

Washington, Mar 7 (UNI) A Bush administration report cites "numerous serious problems" on India's human rights front, including extrajudicial killings of persons in custody, disappearances, torture and rape by police and security forces. The US State Department's annual report on human rights, released yesterday, however, notes that the government of India "generally" respected the rights of its citizens. At the same time, it says "the lack of accountability permeated the government and security forces, creating an atmosphere in which human rights.....

Completion of Phase-I Godavari water project by 2009

Hyderabad, Mar 13 (UNI) A review meeting called by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today decided that the Phase-I Project of diverting Godavari water to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad would be completed by 2009. Tenders for the project would be invited by this year end, after studying the project report.
