Four States Set Up Hr Ed Councils - Rest To Follow

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) At least four States have set up Higher Education Councils, guidelines for which have been circulated to all States by the University Grants Commission, Parliament was told today.

The four States are Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said in the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

She said the UGC has circulated the guidelines on setting up State Council of Higher Education to all Chief Ministers and the Governors of the States.

She said two Scholarships have been introduced by the Central government from the academic session 2005-06, the nodal agency for which is the UGC.

They are: Post Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holders in General and Honours courses at Undergraduate level and Post-Graduate Scholarship scheme for Single Girl Child.

The rate of scholarship is Rs 2,000 per month for a period of two years (10 months per year), she said.

Ten states yet to set up State Human Rights Commission: Jaiswal

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) Despite repeated directions from the Centre and the National Human Rights Commission, as many as ten states have not constituted State Human Rights Commission, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.
