Civil Society in Nepal demands action against King Gyanendra

Kathmandu, Mar 7 (UNI) Nepal's Civil Society for Peace and Democracy today urged the government to initiate action against King Gyanendra for suppressing peaceful demonstration against his dictatorial rule last year.

''We are protesting against the government for institutionalising the culture of impunity by not punishing the king,'' the society leaders said.

The society staged a peaceful 'sit-in' in front of the Prime Minister's residence demanding the king to be punished for suppressing the April movement and violation of human rights.

At least 21 people, including one Indian national were killed and over 5,000 people injured - most of them in the head - during the anti King demonstration held across the country that forced Gyanendra to give up dictatorial rule.

The popular April movement had mandated action against the king since he was responsible for the bloody crackdown and human rights violations, the Society leaders said.

A Judicial commission formed after the success of the popular movement under the chairmanship of a former justice of the supreme court has found Gyanendra gulity of the human rights violation.
