CII to organise 'Indo-US Economic Summit' in TN capital

Chennai, Mar 7 (UNI) The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with the US India Business Council (USIBC), will organise an 'Indo-US Economic Summit' here on March nine.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Arcot Veerasamy would deliver the special address at the summit, which would be attended by a high-level delegation from the USIBC, CII Executive Officer R Sivakumar told UNI here today.

US Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice-President International Affairs Lt Gen (Retd) Dan Christman, would highlight the need for higher Indo-US Cooperation at the Summit, he added.

Tamil Nadu Industries Secretary Shaktikanta Das and Consulate General of US, Chennai Consul General David Hopper would address the Summit.

The Summit would have a separate session on US-India Emerging Business Opportunities in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Chairman and Managing Director Dr S Ramasundaram would make a presentation on the strengths of Tamil Nadu.

Apollo Hospitals Managing Director Preetha Reddy and Cognizant Technology Solutions Vice Chairman N Lakshmi Narayanan would also address the Summit.

During the Summit, USIBC senior members would discuss the emerging opportunities for mutual cooperation.

Over 20 senior representatives of US based companies would participate in the Summit.

Agriculture Ministry sanctions Rs.81.86 crore to N-E states

Shillong, Mar 8 (UNI) The Union Ministry of Agriculture has released Rs 81.86 crore to the North Eastern States during 2006-07, under the Centrally-Sponsored Scheme on Technology Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture in North Eastern Region. Official sources said the scheme aims at establishing convergence and synergy among numerous ongoing governmental programmes through horizontal and vertical integration of these programmes, to ensure adequate, appropriate, timely and concurrent attention to all the links in the production, post-harvest and consumption chain. Settlement Commission to be spruced up, no sops: FM

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) Finance Minister P Chidambaram today asked India Inc to desist from seeking fiscal sops to maintain the current bullish growth momentum and said the Settelment Commission will be streamlined to improve the time period in disposing off cases. In a post Budget interactive session with Assocham, Mr Chidambaram gave a categorical assurance that the grey areas in policy and procedural hassels would be addressed by the government sooner than later to enable a more rapid growth.....

327 huts destroyed in fire

Puducherry, Mar 3 (UNI) As many as 327 thatched huts were destroyed in a fire at Davidpet here this afternoon. Electrical short circuit is suspected to be the cause of fire. Fire tenders from Puducherry town, Gorimedu, Villianur and Kalapet were pressed into service to douse the flames. However, there was no loss of life. The total property loss was estimated at Rs one crore. UNI.....
