CEC to review first phase polling preparedness on Mar 10

Lucknow, Mar 7 (UNI) Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami will review poll preparation for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh poll on March 10.

The CEC will visit Kanpur and Agra on the day to review the preparation with senior officials for the first phase of polling in 62 assembly seats slated to go to polls on April 7.

State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anuj Kumar Bishnoi said here today he will accompany Mr Gopalasami to both the places.

The notification for the first phase would be issued on March 13.

Nominations filed for MLC polls

Hyderabad, Mar 7 (UNI) As many as 31 candidates, including 20 from the ruling Congress and five from the main opposition Telugu Desam Party filed their papers on the last day for filing of nominations for the 31 Legislative Council seats for the elections to be held on March 17. In all 32 candidates, including two each from the CPI and Telangana Rashtra Samity (TRS), the one from the AIMIM and an independent supported by the TRS rebel MLAs had filed.....

Two constables kill selves

Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, Mar 8 (UNI) Two police constables committed suicide today in tribal-dominated and naxalism-affected Bastar division while a third constable died of malaria, the police said. Mizoram Battalion Constable Falta Kima (38), posted in Dantewada district's Konta, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound from his service rifle at a camp this morning. The motive was unclear. By-poll for two Assembly seats in Nagaland begins

Kohima, Mar 8 (UNI) Polling for the byelections to Dimapur-I and Tuensang Sadar II Assembly constituencies in Nagaland began at 0700 hrs today, amid tight security arrangements. Election officials said the polling started at all 59 booths peacefully as voters lined up since dawn to cast their ballots. Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer C J Ponraj told UNI that over 35000 voters are expectedto exercise their franchise in the two districts.
