Calcutta High Court Chief Justice sworn-in

Kolkata , Mar 7 (UNI) Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar was sworn-in as the Chief Justice of the century-old Calcutta High Court at a function today.

Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi administered the oath to Justice Nijjar.

Justice Nijjar, a former judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court, succeeded Vikash Sridhar Sirpurkar, who was promoted to the Supreme Court nearly three months back.

Justice Nijjar took over the charge from the acting-Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya.

Justice Nijjar was the 33rd Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, which was established in 1862.

Industry threatens closure if mining export duty not withdrawn

Panaji, Mar 1 (UNI) Goa's iron ore export industry, the second largest foreign exchange earner after tourism, has threatened to close down if the Centre does not withdraw the Rs 300 per metric tonne export duty proposed in the Budget 2007-08. ''We have already cancelled five China-bound vessels today under the impact of the budget. SC dismisses Karan Pandher's transfer petition

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition filed by Karan Deep Singh Pandher, son of main accused Moninder Singh Pandher in the Nithari rape and murder case, seeking transfer of his father's case from Ghaziabad court to a Delhi court. A Bench comprising Justice B N Agarwal and Justice P P Naolekar dismissed the petition on the ground that the investigation by CBI was yet to be completed and it is premature to transfer the case.....

Lalu announces cash reward to 5 lakh group 'D' employees

Vadodara, Mar 1 (UNI) Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today announced a cash reward of Rs 400 each to all group 'D' employees in appreciation of their good work. Mr Prasad announced the cash award to five lakh employees of the Indian railways, following a discussion with National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR) General-Secretary M Raghavaiyah this evening.
