Asom stunned and embarrassed over Subba row

Guwahati, Mar 7 (UNI) Asom is stunned by three-time MP Mani Kumar Subba's dubious citizenship row.

The Congress today ducked for cover as new evidence nailed the MP and chief fund raiser of the Asom Congress. The Nepali citizen, against whom a murder charge exists, has been absconding from his country for over three decades.

The opposition parties mounted pressure both inside and outside the state assembly, while people were horrified how the MP could contest and become a law maker of the country despite having dubious nationality and a murder charge.

''My head hangs in shame,'' said opposition leader Brindabon Goswami.

Mr Subba represents Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency while Mr Goswami represents the assembly segment.

''This blot in Indian democracy will never go even if he is ousted from Parliament,'' he said.

The Congress kept a low profile as Mr Subba has been their chief fund raiser for the past one and half decades. All attempts to get an official statement from the state headquarters proved futile.

''What has been published about Mr Subba and whatever has been shown in television channels are nothing new. Asom's media have been telling these for the last 10 years but the Congress government never felt it important enough to take it seriously. They are after his colossal ill-gotten money which he amassed through gambling,'' said BJP MLA Mission Ranjan Das.

These allegations have been coming repeatedly over the past ten years but Mr Subba remained the MP of Congress for three successive terms, using his deep pocket to help many people of his constituency.
