Armed Forces spend 12 crore in NE under civic action programme

Itanagar, Mar 7(UNI) In order to boost the image of the armed forces as the custodian of common people, the Army and Central Paramilitary Forces have spend Rs 12 crore in North Eastern states during the last two years for executing various civic action programmes.

Under these programmes, various welfare and developmental activities were undertaken, which include organising medical camps, sanitation drives, sports meet, distribution of study materials to children, bridges and running adult education centres.

Out of the total amount spent during 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, the BSF provided Rs 1.2 crore followed by CRPF (Rs 1.35 crore), ITBP (Rs 1 crore), SSB (0.87 crore), Assam Rifles (4.566 crore) and Army (3 crores).

The Assam Rifles executed various schemes in the region in the areas of education, health, hygiene, vocational training, places of worship, promotion and conducting excursion for children.

The Border Security Force (BSF) deployed in the NE with security responsibilities had also made special efforts to reach out to the people of the region.

The CRPF have also launched several welfare schemes under the Civic Action Programme covering a wide area relevant to the quality of lives of the people in the NE region.

ITBP units organised medical camps, distributed school material among students carried out maintenance of roads and organised martial arts training camps for children.

52 EVMs failed during Manipur polls

Imphal, Feb 24 (UNI) Altogether 52 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have failed during the three phases of recent Manipur polls, Chief Electoral Officer R R Rashmi today said.
