After villages, K'taka Govt to launch scheme for devt of towns

Mysore, Mar 7 (UNI) The Karnataka Government has decided to take up 'Survana Nagara Yojane' on the lines of the 'Survana Grama Yojane' soon, Municipal Administration Minister Alangur Srinivas said today.

Addressing media persons after holding a review meeting here, he said his department had submitted a draft report to the Government and sought budgetary allocation of Rs 100 crore in the coming budget for the programme. He had talked to Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa in this regard.

Explaining the project, the Minister said Rs four to five crore would be spent on each town in the State for its overall development. Besides his department's allocation for the project, additional funds would be obtained from the slum board, housing board and industries department.

Mr Srinivas said the project would allocate nearly 100 acres of land in each town for industrial development and increasing employment generation.

He said he had been touring the State and holding review meetings at divisional levels to tackle drinking water problems at various districts. The Ministry had instructed all the district authorities to take up necessary steps to provide drinking water to every one.

Japanese students help construction activities

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, March 15 (UNI) A group of 130 students from a University in Japan are helping the volunteers of Amrithananda Mayee Mutt to construct permanent houses for Tsunami victims at Nagapattinam. According to Mutt sources, the students were helping the labourers by carrying construction materials to the site and painting the houses. The Mutt, which had constructed 326 houses for the Tsunami victims at Nagapattinam, was constructing yet another 314 houses. Earlier, a batch of 88 students from Japan.....

Protests against Nandigram killing disrupt traffic

Rajahmundry, Mar 15 (UNI) The volunteers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist-New Democracy) today staged rasta roko disrupting traffic in protest against the Nandigram police firing in which 14 farmers were killed and many injured. The agitation led by CPI(ML-ND) town secretary K Joju raised slogans against the West Bengal Government and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Speaking on the occasion Mr Joju demanded the resignation of Mr Bhattacharjee and demanded an inquiry into the incident. UNI.....

No let up in Cauvery protests

Mysore, Mar 7 (UNI) Even as the members of Parliament from Karnataka staged a protest in New Delhi against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, the agitations continued unabated in the Cauvery basin districts of Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar for the 31st day today.
