400-year-old Quran seized from Kerala smuggler

Bangalore, Mar 7 (UNI) The CCB police today seized a 400-year-old copy of the Holy Quran, valued at Rs five crore, and a rare painting of Thanjavur King Sarfoji and arrested a smuggler from Kerala here.

Police Commissioner N Achyuta Rao said the handwritten Quran, which had the signature of Moghul Emperor Aurangazeb in every page, was applied with different perfumes in each of its pages. The pages of the 13 kg Quran also had a special coating, making it fire-resistant.

The framed three-dimensional painting, which measured four ft in height and weighed nearly 140 kg, portrayed the 18th century king in the company of his Prime Minister.

Mr Rao said the arrested, identified as N G Sukumaran, was trying to sell the artifacts to some overseas customers at an estimated price of Rs five crore, when police trapped him.

''We would send the Quran to the Archaeology Department to ascertain its authenticity,'' he added.

HC reserves judgement on ADB loan issue

Kochi, Mar 7 (UNI) A Division Bench of Kerala High Court today reserved judgement on a batch of writ petitions filed by the Anti-Asian Developmental Bank (ADB) Loan Committee. The petitioners contended that the agreement between the Kerala government and ADB was detrimental to the interests of the state. The Bench comprising acting Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice M N Krishnan reserved judgement after hearing the petitioners. The counsel for the petitioners submitted that they were not against availing.....

Gold vessel donated

Tirumala, Feb 24 (UNI) A Bangalore-based devotee of Lord Venkateswara has donated Rs 25 lakh-worth gold vessel to the Lord Venkateswara Temple here. The devotee, who preferred to be anonymous, handed over 2.5 kg gold vessel to temple peshkar Umapathy yesterday, a TTD official said. The vessel would be used during special occasions like Maha Samprokshna in the temple, the official added. UNI.....

Comedian Parag Kansara and his wife held for slapping cop

Vadodara, Mar 8 (UNI) TV star comedian Parag Kansara of the Great Indian Laughter Challenge fame, and his wife were arrested by the city police for allegedly slapping, abusing and threatening a traffic police constable. The incident occured yesterday when traffic constable Narsinh Parmar stopped the Vadodara-based comedian couple's car at Fategunj circle and fined Rs 100 for driving without seatbelt. Police, however, arrested the couple under sections 332 and 182 of IPC and various sections of Motor Vehicles Act when.....
