University of Mysore to hold R K Narayan Centenary Intl Conference

Bangalore, Mar 6 (UNI) University of Mysore, Department of Studies in English has organised an International Conference to mark the Centenary year of renowned English Writer R K Narayan from March 7 to 9.

Prof Syd Harrex of the Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia would deliver the keynote address. Prof Harrex, who is also the Founder-Director of the Centre for research in New Literatures in English at his University, has done a pioneering study on Indian English Fiction in the mid-seventies, according to a release issued here today by the Department Chairman Prof Mahadeva.

In all 23 papers would be presented during the Conference in which delegates from Italy, Sri Lanka and Pakistan besides Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Banaras Hindu University and Universities in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal and Karnataka are participating.

Some of the papers take an overview of Narayan's entire works while others would focus either on individual novels or make comparative studies. Indian Aesthetics would provide the basis for new Readings of some of his novels.

Prof Mahadeva said that "it is appropriate that Mysore University is the first University in the country to organise an International Conference on R K Narayan to mark his Birth Centenary. While Maharajas College was his Alma Mater, this University was the first to prescribe the works of R K Narayan in its syllabi both at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses".

Inspector shot dead in Bihar

Biharsharif, Mar 6 (UNI) Inspector Shekhar Singh posted at Asthawan police station was shot dead by armed criminals at Biharsharif in Nalanda district late last night.

According to police the criminals opened fire at Mr Singh near the railway crossing in Biharsharif when he was on way to the police station from his residence.Mr Singh died on the spot.

Raids were on to nab the criminals.

Karnataka Congress calls for fresh elections

Bangalore, Mar 6: Karnataka Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge today firmly denied joining hands again with Janata Dal (Secular) to form a government and charged that the coalition partners JD(S) and Bharatiya Janata Party were creating confusion in the minds of the people as they had lost mutual trust.

Speaking to newsmen here he denied that the party chief Sonia Gandhi had met JD(S) Chief H D Deve Gowda at New Delhi recently and said the Congress had nothing to.....

UP: Girl raped by friend's brother

Mahoba, Mar 6: A girl was allegedly raped by her friend's brother in Charkhari area of this district of Uttar Pradesh.

In her complaint, the girl alleged Narendra Lodhi assaulted her at Gorkha village under Charkhari police station area last night.

The victim is a close friend of Narendra's sister, police said.

A hunt for the accused was on.

Uttar Pradesh: Policeman's wife immolates herself

Mahoba, Mar 6: A woman committed suicide at her residence in Bhatipura area of the district today.

Jaya wife of constable Ram Charan Singh doused herself with kerosene and set herself afire under Bhatipura police station area.

The reason behind the crime, however, remained a puzzle, police said.

A case was registered and investigations were on.

HR violators will have to face law of the land: CM

Kokernag, South Kashmir, Mar 6 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has said security forces and police personnel found involved in the killing of innocent persons or violating other Human Rights (HR) in the name of fighting militancy will have to face the law of the land.

The Chief Minister was speaking at a function here yesterday after distributing ex-gratia relief cheques of Rupees one lakh each and appointment order to the next of kin of those killed.....
