Project delays: FKCCI to petition MPs

Bangalore, Mar 6: The Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) has decided to meet the Karnataka members of parliament from the state to appraise them the delay in implementation of various infrastructure projects pending with the center and urge them to pursue for early clearances.

Addressing a press conference FKCCI President R C Purohit said thanks to the initiative taken by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rahaman Khan a meeting had been fixed on March eight at the Parliament. A 36-member FKCCI delegation would attend the meeting, he said.

He said MP's would be briefed about projects including State Highways, Sea Ports, Airports, Railways, Power and Tourism projects, which were approved by the state government but delayed due to want of central clearance.

Listing major projects which needed early implementation he said Rs 390-crore Gulbarga-Bidar broad-gauge railway line, development of airports at Hassan, Bidar, Gulbarga, Bijapur and Shimoga had suffered delays. He said that despite its rich potential the state had only one Major sea port at New Mangalore and urged to take up another project at Malpe for which the state government had sent a Rs 140 crore proposal.

Mr Purohit said that Karnataka stands 5th in the country in industrialisation, and ranked 3rd most preferred state in the country by the Foreign Direct Investors for investment. Several infrastructure projects were still pending with the center and expeditious clearance of these pending proposals will help the state to achieve alround development.

University of Mysore to hold R K Narayan Centenary Intl Conference

Bangalore, Mar 6 (UNI) University of Mysore, Department of Studies in English has organised an International Conference to mark the Centenary year of renowned English Writer R K Narayan from March 7 to 9.

Prof Syd Harrex of the Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia would deliver the keynote address. Prof Harrex, who is also the Founder-Director of the Centre for research in New Literatures in English at his University, has done a pioneering study on Indian English Fiction in the mid-seventies, according.....

Inspector shot dead in Bihar

Biharsharif, Mar 6 (UNI) Inspector Shekhar Singh posted at Asthawan police station was shot dead by armed criminals at Biharsharif in Nalanda district late last night.

According to police the criminals opened fire at Mr Singh near the railway crossing in Biharsharif when he was on way to the police station from his residence.Mr Singh died on the spot.

Raids were on to nab the criminals.

UP: Girl raped by friend's brother

Mahoba, Mar 6: A girl was allegedly raped by her friend's brother in Charkhari area of this district of Uttar Pradesh.

In her complaint, the girl alleged Narendra Lodhi assaulted her at Gorkha village under Charkhari police station area last night.

The victim is a close friend of Narendra's sister, police said.

A hunt for the accused was on.

Uttar Pradesh: Policeman's wife immolates herself

Mahoba, Mar 6: A woman committed suicide at her residence in Bhatipura area of the district today.

Jaya wife of constable Ram Charan Singh doused herself with kerosene and set herself afire under Bhatipura police station area.

The reason behind the crime, however, remained a puzzle, police said.

A case was registered and investigations were on.
