Monica case: Superintendent deposes

Bhopal, Mar 6 (UNI) A local court today recorded the statement of the Superintendent, Passports Office, in a fake passports case against underworld don Abu Salem and his starlet-girlfriend Monica Bedi.

''The passports of Danish Baig (Salem), Rubina Baig (Salem's wife Samira Jumani) and Fauzia Osman (Monica) were sent for police verification from my office. After the police report was received, letters were dispatched to the trio informing them that they had not submitted birth certificates,'' said Superintendent Amar Jeenus Lakda.

Later, they submitted affidavits in that regard and the passports were issued after verification was completed, he added.

Defence Counsel P C Bedi refused to cross-examine the witness by saying that Public Prosecutor R K Motwani made related documents available only today. The cross-examination will take place tomorrow. Monica was brought to court amidst heavy security.

Witnesses J P Pali and Mujeeb Nazmi could not appear as they were out of station.

On November 28, 2001, a case was registered at the Koh-i-Fiza Police Station against Salem, Samira and Monica for having fake passports made at the regional passports office using the names Danish, Rubina and Fauzia respectively.

TNLA activities eliminated in Tamil Nadu: Police

Tiruchirapalli, Mar 6 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu police today claimed to have curbed the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA), a banned extremist outfit in the Northern and Central parts of the state. Talking to newspersons here, Mr K Radhakrishnan and Mr M S Jaffar Sait, Inspector Generals of Police, Northern and Central Zones respectively said with the active coordination between the police of both the zones, TNLA activists were eradicated from Perambalur and Cuddalore districts. HC upholds land acquisition for NLC

Chennai, Mar 6 (UNI) Madras High Court today upheld land acquisition proceedings of the Tamil Nadu government in Cuddalore District for the second mine expansion scheme of Neyveli Lignite Corporation. A Division Bench comprising Justices P D Dinakaran and P P S Janarthana Raja upheld the proceedings by an order dated April 24, 2003 of the state government while dismissing a batch of petitions from K Ramakrishnan and others, challenging it. Ministry of Environment to frame new rules for NCR region

New Delhi, Feb 24 (UNI) Taking serious note of NCR region becoming a dumping ground for garbage and other solid waste deposits, the Ministry of Environment and Forests would put in place a new set of rules in the next four months. The step will replace the existing 2,000 rules which municipalities in the region would have to comply with.
