Indian workers win case against employers, return home penniless

Dubai, Mar 6 (UNI) Three Indian workers, who remain unpaid despite winning a court case against their employer over non-payment of indemnity of around 3,000 Bahraini Dhiram are set to travel home next week.

Murali Dharan, who worked as an electrician for 20 years and two others named Sunil Aniyeri and Lionel Peters resigned two years ago in protest over non-payment of wages and had been living on handouts.

The men, allegedly abondoned by their bosses, were later accused by the company as being "runaway workers".

They are among 27 Indian, Pakistani and Nepali workers who have filed cases against the Al Khaja Establishment in September 2005 over withholding salaries, leave and indemnity, Gulf Daily News reported.

Seeing their plight the Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF) stepped in to pay for their tickets and overstay fines.

The Migrant Workers Protection Society (MWPS) hopes to pursue the case further.

Dhaka, Mar 6 (UNI) At least 21 people, mostly women and children, were killed in a fire in southeastern city of Chittagong early today, police and hospital sources said. At least 70 people killed in Indonesian quake

Bangkok, Mar 6 (UNI) An earthquake struck Indonesia's Sumatra island today, leaving at least 70 people dead and hundreds injured sending emergency operations into full swing. The earthquake estimated at 5.8 on the Richter scale by Indonesian meteorological office, hit at 1049 hrs, local time. The quake, followed by an aftershock of the same intensity two hours later, was also felt in Malaysia and Singapore, leading to evacuations from high rise buildings.
