Govt examining impact of Bharti-WalMart tieup on unorganised retail

New Delhi, Mar 6 (UNI) The Government has commissioned a reputed research organisation to comprehensively evaluate the impact of organised retailing on the unorganised retail sector following representations received on the Bharti-WalMart tie-up, Minister of State for Industry Ashwani Kumar today told the Lok Sabha.

Stating that "FDI into India is permitted only through an incorporated entity", Dr Ashwani Kumar said these entities have to operate in conformity with Indian laws which contain provision for taking suitable action for any violation thereof including violation of human rights and labour laws.

"As of now, no violation as above has been brought to the notice of the government," he told the members.

According to information furnished by M/s Bharti Enterprises (I) Pvt Ltd, vide their letter dated January 18 last, the firm has entered into an agreement with Wal-Mart in setting up back-end infrastructure like cold chains, logistics, sourcing and merchandising for cash and carry wholesale operations.

No archaeological study to prove bridge between India and Lanka

New Delhi, Mar 6 (UNI) The government today said there were no archaeological studies that revealed the existence of a Ram Sethu (bridge) between India and Sri Lanka. Security concerns on FDI being addressed: Ashwani Kumar

New Delhi, Mar 6 (UNI) The Government today said proposals which required prior government approval for foreign direct investment (FDI) were considered by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), an inter-ministerial body, which took into account all factors including security matters.
