EC warns UP govt against illegal use of beacons, hooters

Lucknow, Mar 6 (UNI) Election Commission today directed the Uttar Pradesh government for strict adherence to the Allahabad High Court order against the unauthorised use of beacon lights and hooters by vehicles in the state.

In its directive, a copy of which was sent to the state election office tonighth here, the EC has said the HC order be striclty followed at any cost.

The EC has also separately written to the district returning officers asking them to take strict action, if anyone was found violating the rules.

Earlier, on June 23, 2006 and February 14, 2007, the HC had directed the state government against the illegal use of beacon lights and hooters. However, the state government was yet to take tough measures in this regard.

The EC has warned any laxity would tantamout to the contempt of the HC.

UDF strike turns violent, five cops injured

Kozhikode, Mar 6 (UNI) Five police personnel, including two officers, were injured as the opposition United Democratic Front(UDF) sponsored strike turned violent at different places here today. Police said Nallalam Sub-Inspector Balachandran and constable Manoj sustained injuries when irate UDF protesters, who took out a procession at the locality, pelted stones at security men on duty. Govt not allowing oppn to raise public issues: TDP leaders

Hyderabad, Mar 6 (UNI) Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders today alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government was reluctant to discuss various public issues in the state Assembly and was creating problems by adjourning the House and denying chances to opposition leaders to raise issues.
