CPI(Maoist) says Mahto killed to avenge lynching of 11 ultras

Jamshedpur, Mar 6 (UNI) The CPI(Maoist) today said it was responsible for killing JMM general secretary and MP from Jamshedpur Sunil Mahto to avenge the lynching of 11 Naxals at Lango in east Singbhum district in 2004.

Pamphlets of the Naxals were seen on the walls at Lango and Hadiyan villages, Superintendent of Police Pankaj Darad told UNI here adding the ultras said they had killed Mahto as revenge.

The deceased MP was instrumental in generating mass opinion against insurgency and Nagarik Suraksha Samittee (NSS) was formed in Naxal-dominated area to counter their attacks which was specially monitored by then SP Arun Oraon.

On August 7, 2004, villagers at Lango had caught Naxals and lynched 11 of them.

Reacting to the Naxals' claim of killing Mahto at Baguria, Mr Darad said the police took it as a challenge and would intensify the counter-insurgency operations.

High alert was sounded in the state immediately after the JMM MP and another party leader Prabhakar Mahto, alongwith two bodyguards, were shot dead by the Maoist activists at Baguria village near Naxalite-affected Ghatshila in East Singhbhum district on March four.

Surrender policy to be reviewed: Koda

Jamshedpur, Mar 6 (UNI) Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda today said the surrender policy for the extremists would be reviewed soon as it was not effective to bring the rebels back to the mainstream. Talking to newspersons here Mr Koda, who came to attend the funeral of slain JMM MP and party general secretary Sunil Mahto, admitted that there were many shortcomings in the existing surrender policy and the government would go through it again and would make it more effective......

Mayurbhanj bandh to protest Mahto's assassination

Baripada, Mar 6 (UNI) A dawn-to-dusk Mayurbhanj bundh was observed today as a mark of protest against the assassination of Jamshedpur MP Sunil Mahto at Baguria village in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district on Sunday. JMM Mayurbhanj district unit President Bhadhav Chandra Hansda claimed that the bandh affected life at many places. The party, however, had kept local bus service and other essential services outside the purview of the bandh so that the examinees of the ongoing +2 examination will not face.....

Uco Bank enhances interest rates on deposits

Kolkata, Mar 6 (UNI) UCO Bank has revised the rates of interest for deposits of Rs.15 lakh and above upto Rs.1 crore ranging from one year to five years and above with effect from March 7, 2007.
