Congress bags mayorship of Jammu

Jammu, Mar 6 (UNI) In a close battle for Mayorship, Congress candidate Narinder Singh today defeated his BJP rival Kavinder Gupta in the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) election.

Mr Singh bagged 39 votes while Mr Gupta, former Mayor got 32.

Meanwhile, National Conference candidate Dharamveer Jamwal defeated the independent candidate Ms Neerja Khajuria in the fight for the Deputy Mayor's post.

Ms Khajuria, who was supported by BJP, got only 27 votes while Mr Jamwal bagged 44.

The election reportedly witnessed cross-voting by some councillors in the 71-member JMC.

Mahto killing: UP candidates to get security in naxalite belt

Lucknow, Mar 7 (UNI) In the wake of assassination of JMM MP Sunil Mahto, The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to provide security for candidates of recognised political parties from the naxal-infested segments in the forthcoming assembly elections.
