Concession to MP jailbirds on Women's Day

Bhopal, Mar 6 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to waive the remaining sentences of certain categories of female prisoners on the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8, official sources said.

Those sentenced to life terms after December 18, 1978, those who have served 14 years and those who have served half their terms until March 8, 2007 would be freed. However, the Jail Department would not grant the concession to offenders investigated under the Delhi Police Establishment Act or any agency under a central act.

Habitual offenders and those not having paid surety would not be released.

Those booked for crimes relating to dowry, corruption, terrorism, fake medicine, Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, pension, excise, adulteration and people's representation would not be given any concession.

Ahluwalia back as Patiala MC Commissioner

Patiala, Mar 6 (UNI) The Punjab government today appointed senior IAS officer S K Ahluwalia as Commissioner of the Patiala Municipal Corporation. Mr Ahluwalia, whose appointment orders were issued at Chandigarh, assumed has charge, an official spokesman here said. Mr Ahluwalia was unceremoniously removed and shifted out as MC Commissioner last year following his differences with city mayor Vishnu Sharma, a close confidant of former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh. 1,068 cops punished in past one decade in Goa

Panaji, Mar 6 (UNI) As many as 1,068 police officials had been punished either over corruption charges, misuse of official position or other irregularities during the last 10 years since 1997. Goa Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane, in reply to an unstarred question of Francis P D'Souza (BJP) in the Legislative Assembly yesterday, said two police officers had been punished through enquiries initiated by the Directorate of Vigilance and seven officials of the rank of Police Inspectors had been facing disciplinary proceedings......

Battle for Gwalior: Canvassing in full bloom
