Chhatra Parishad members arrested for demonstration

Kolkata, Mar 6(UNI) Police arrested 54 Chhatra Parishad supporters, including four women, when they staged a snap demonstration in front of the state secretariat at the Writers' Buildings today demanding punishment of a police officer who had allegedly shot dead a Congress activist in Burdwan last week.

Shouting slogans and holding posters, the demonstrators, belonging to the students wing of the Congress, took police by surprise as they suddenly thronged the prohibited zone in front of the central gate of the building.

Debojyoti Saha, the accused officer-in-charge of Katwa police station, had allegedly shot dead Mr Tuhin Samanta, a law college lecturer, during polling for the governing body of a local school on February 25.

The OC, arrested following the incident, was released on bail.

Alleging that the firing by the police officer was unprovoked, the Congress demanded that he be arrested under non-bailable section.
