21 people killed in fire in southeastern Bangladesh

Dhaka, Mar 6 (UNI) At least 21 people, mostly women and children, were killed in a fire in southeastern city of Chittagong early today, police and hospital sources said.

The fire broke out in a gowdown of cut pieces of cloth and spread to a nearby slum, where people were in deep sleep, police said.

Ten children and eight women were among those killed.

The fire was brought under control after five hours of effort by firefighters and local people.

At least 70 people killed in Indonesian quake

Bangkok, Mar 6 (UNI) An earthquake struck Indonesia's Sumatra island today, leaving at least 70 people dead and hundreds injured sending emergency operations into full swing. The earthquake estimated at 5.8 on the Richter scale by Indonesian meteorological office, hit at 1049 hrs, local time. The quake, followed by an aftershock of the same intensity two hours later, was also felt in Malaysia and Singapore, leading to evacuations from high rise buildings. Ayyappa temple opens tomorrow for pooja
