2 women drown in canal

Lakhimpur Kheri, Mar 6 (UNI) Two women drowned in the Sharda canal here, when the boat they were being ferried on capsized midstream this evening.

The victims were identified as Champa Devi (70) and her grand-daugher Lalli (10) of village Rajpur Kabiraha.

The incident occurred in Isanagar area, police said.

About 15 people were travelling in the boat, however, 13 of them swam to safety.

The body of Champa had been fished out, while divers were trying to recover the girl's corpse.

Child killed in grenade explosion in Kishtwar

Jammu, Mar 6 (UNI) An eight-year-old boy was killed while a girl was injured in a grenade blast at Chatroo in Kishtwar tehsil of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources today said. Sajjad Ahmed Wani, 8, was killed and his cousin Rukaya Bano, 6, critically injured when a grenade exploded in their house at Rather Mohalla in village Kucchal yesterday, the sources said. The injured child was hospitalised with splinter injuries in her ribs. UNI.....

CPI-M leader files nomination

Hyderabad, Mar 5 (UNI) Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Ch Sitaramulu today filed his nomination papers for the election to state Legislative Council scheduled on March 17. The CPI-M leader, accompanied by party MLAs, submitted his nomination papers to Returning Officer Tuljananda Singh at the Secretariat. Mr Sitaramulu is the first candidate to file nomination under MLA quota. The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had extended support to Mr Sitaramulu in the election. Kochi, Mar 6 (UNI) The Indian Pepper and Spice Trade Association today cited that there was wide disparity between NCDEX and NMCE prices on pepper though both were trading on MG-1 quality pepper. In a statement here, Association President M L Parekh said NMCE was maturing on March 15 and NCDEX on March 20 but there was a price variation of Rs eight on the same grade of pepper to be delivered as MG-1. Eight nominations for council byelection in Bihar

Darbhanga, Mar 6 (UNI) Altogether eight candidates, including Congress and JD(U) nominees, today filed their nomination papers for Darbhanga graduate constituency byelection for the Bihar Legislative Council to be held on March 24. Filing of nomination would continue till tomorrow and the scrutiny will be held on March 8. Withdrawal of candidature is on March 10.
